Location

Traditional dancers in BaliBali is a beautiful, enchanted island full of mystery and adventure. It is located near the main Indonesian island of Java. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, Bali stands alone as an oasis of Hindu culture. It is filled with temples and everywhere one goes you are constantly reminded of their deep spirituality. Its landscape is lush and tropical. Rice paddies terrace down hillsides like giant steps. Volcanoes soar through the clouds and the beaches are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali. For more than a century, it has been the island's preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. Ubud is a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors, connoisseurs, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians to name a few.

Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you're looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Ubud is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, markets, art and craft communities, ancient temples and places. Its central location makes it easy to get from Ubud to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.

What's near Ubud

Beaches - About an hour and a half from Ubud is Kuta, Seminyak, where long stretches of beaches belong to unbelievable sunsets - surfers paradise

Activities - Scuba diving, trekking, white water rafting, sacred sites and temples, shopping, art galleries, amazing wood carvings, Balinese cooking classes, art lessons, visits to healers includingEat Pray Love

EAT PRAY LOVE: The real thing!

Some of you might remember the healers in the Bali chapters of Eat Pray Love. We can arrange readings and visits with both Ketut, the Medicine Man and Elizabeth Gilbert's healer friend in Ubud, named Wayan for those of us who want to go! And if you haven't read Eat, Prey, Love then it's a must read getting you ready for Bali - buy it here...

Members of ASEAN countries do need a visa. If you are from another country, please read about visa requirements and other important details in the Travel Bali Section of www.balispirit.com

Banking
The exchange rate is approximately Rp.15,000 = UK£1.00. Basically, things cost a lot less in Bali. There are ATM's all over the place that take Cirrus and Plus. PLEASE tell your bank and credit card companies the dates that you will be in Bali or elsewhere, as they might cut off your funds for fraud protection if they don't know it is you. Asia loves Visa or Master card.

Few restaurants and shops take American Express.

A typical dinner at Kafe Ubud will cost you between UK £5-10

What About Credit Cards, Cash, Exchange Rates & Money Changers?

Most small shops, restaurants & tour companies run on cash. ATM machines are rampant on the island, most having the Cirrus and Plus connection. You often get a very good exchange rate via ATM and its convenient. Money Changers are all over Bali, although not all over them trustworthy. Try and stay away from the small storefront Balinese money changers - the guys with hand written signs and made up rates.... The larger establishments, or those that say 'authorized money changer', will be a safer bet. For Credit Cards in Bali - Diners is non-existent & American Express is rarely accepted, although there is an American Express office somewhere on the island where you can go to buy travelers checks and report stolen cards if need be. Visa and MasterCard are the cards of choice. Remember to inform your credit card's issuing bank about your intended trip or else you will risk getting your credit card accounts frozen from 'un-expected activity'. Lastly, to see the most recent exchange rate, check here: www.xe.com, but realize that the online rate is rarely 100% correct and will be off by a few cents.

Calling Home There is IDD in most hotel rooms.  The code to call outside the country is:  008+country code+area code+number

What to Wear
Your rooms and the hotel are air conditioned. But it is hot outside. Bathing suits are a good idea. There is an infinity pool at the hotel overlooking the rice fields. Good walking sandals are a must. Bermuda shorts or pedal pushers are a good idea. We also recommend light folding umbrella.

When touring a sacred site in Bali it is improper for women or men to enter wearing shorts or a very short skirt. One is provided with a sarong to cover the legs. Be aware of the respect accorded these areas and dress appropriately. I suggest that you pack cool cotton clothing   What kind of clothes will I need? A rain poncho or umbrella will come in handy, and both can be purchased inexpensively here. As this time is Bali's summer, the rains tend to be warm and humid, but a light jacket can be useful for evenings. Comfortable sandals are a must, and should be easy to take off as most Balinese do not wear shoes indoors. Same day laundry service is inexpensive and plentiful, so you're better off to pack light. Don't forget your swimming costumes!

Although the Balinese are used to western tourists, they are still a modest culture, so walking down city streets with no shirt on will likely get you a sideways glance or two. Anytime you go into a temple for a ceremony or tourist attraction you MUST wear a long sleeve shirt, pants or preferably sarong that cover your knees. Women and men have separate requirements, and the Balinese are only to happy to explain the rules and outfit you accordingly if you're minus an appropriate item or two.
