Leila's teaching style is inspiring, informative, and humorous; she is a fairly brainy person, and, reflective of her eight years of working therapeutically with the body, she enjoys educating people about what is happening underneath their skin. At the same time, she offers her students a way to re-think the way they relate to their life through exploring yogic philosophy, contemporary spiritual writing, and other salient sources.
The spirit is one of curiosity and inquiry, and the verbal content of the class underpins yoga asana practice that thoroughly addresses the need of tired, urban-dwelling bodies to unwind and recharge at the deepest level. Students of Leila are cultivating a balance of strength and flexibility, a steadiness of mind, and an openness of heart.
Moreover, folks who study with her will learn the necessary alignment within the poses to both keep them safe in more challenging positions, and to grow their practice from where they are in their bodies now, not from an external ideal. This yoga 'from the inside out' instills confidence in the practitioner, and ensures a steady, consistent growth of prowess.
And, of course, they laugh together. Fun is important.
Anusara Yoga is a heart-oriented, life-affirming form of hatha yoga developed by American teacher John Friend. Grounded in tantric philosophy that affirms the intrinsic goodness of each person, Anusara offers it"s students a systematic approach to yoga asana that is biomechanically savvy, uplifting, and expansive; in Sanskrit, the word "anusara" means, "to flow with grace".
In Anusara-style classes with Leila, we will move through vinyasa flow sequences, we will hold poses, and we will workshop poses, looking closely at the "how-to's" of the more difficult poses, so that each student can expand and deepen their practice over the term.
In the prenatal classes, we will keep our changing bodies flexible, supple, and strong, and imprint on our bodies and minds the techniques we need to center, focus, and remain calm under the rigours of labour. Class will be lighthearted, informative, and grounding.
