Nostril Breathing for Calm Print E-mail
We all breathe. Without breath there would be no human life. However, despite it's obvious importance breathing is something many of us simply allow to happen unconsciously, as if there is no need to nurture or care for the breath. For me, breathing is like a dance, something beautiful and inspiring. Every time you breathe, you take in the essence of existance, the energy of the universe. Control of breathing concentrates the vital nerve energy, leading to increased control of the body and mind.

There are many different techniques for alternate nostril breathing and the one I will show you is amongst the easiest. Alternate nostril breathing tries to balance both nostrils and maintain equilibrium in the body, as well as for general cleansing of the whole body.

This a great calming technique that can be used anywhere by anyone.

Breathing Exercise 1
1. Sit comfortably, it doesn't matter where as long as your back is straight.

Take your right hand into a fist, release your thumb, little finger and the one next door outwards, creating the correct hand position for this technique.

Place your right thumb and gently block your right nostril.

Now inhale slowly and fully.
Breathing Exercise 2
2. To continue, swap nostrils and now block your left nostril with your third finger and exhale out of your right slowly and fully.
 Breathing Exercise 3
3. Stay here and inhale into your right nostril slowly and fully.
 Breathing Exercise 4
4. Again swap nostrils, placing thumb to block right and exhale slowly out of the left.

This completes one round.

So, in short inhale left, exhale right, inhale right, exhale left. Do this for three to nine complete rounds.

After stay seated with your eyes closed and rest.
